Summer salads and BBQs are becoming a distant memory and colder nights have me craving comfort food.
Comfort food doesn’t have to mean beige stodge, with Autumn bringing seasonal delights such as squashes and of course pumpkin.
Tomillo invited me along to their latest tasting menu which showcased how delicious this season could be!
We were greeted with a welcome drink which was absolutely glorious and rimmed with golden brown sugar. The warm mix of Sloe gin, dried cranberries, vanilla, cloudy apple and pear cider was the perfect boozy hug to start our evening.
The menu kicked off with a broccoli mousse topped with garlic cream and a crunchy crostini on the side. It was served chilled which seemed strange at first but it certainly woke up my taste buds as it tasted so fresh.
This was followed by a delicious pumpkin soup which got top marks for presentation as it came served in a pumpkin bowl then topped with a thyme foam and edible flowers. The addition of red cabbage sauerkraut not only provided a contrast of colour but the flavour and crunch worked so well, I’ll definitely be adding it to my soups at home.
Just when I thought the soup would be my stand out dish of the night, an absolutely perfect plate came out that might actually be one of my favourite meals of this year so far! A slice of salt baked butternut squash served with gnocchi, crispy kale and beetroot puree brought together so many of my favourite ingredients. I want to make something very clear, not all gnocchi is created equal! When you think of the supermarket stuff you probably think its quite heavy but gnocchi done right is fluffy crispy pillows of potato joy and that is exactly what Mark created for this dish.
The dessert had a theatrical twist as it was concealed under a glass dome which when removed revealed a thin toffee apple mist, I am an absolute sucker for this type of nonsense. We enjoyed a slice of the cake and lychee gel each then fought over the honeycomb until the plate was completely clear!
If you are drooling reading this then you definitely need to visit Tomillo and I would highly recommend booking in for their festive menu. The menu hasn’t been revealed yet but you will be welcomed by a glass of fizz followed by 4 courses as well as a speciality hot drink and petit fours to finish.
If you have been lucky enough to have visited already then nominate them for The Skinny Food and Drink Awards, I will be certainly nominating them under best dinner as well as best vegan/vegetarian category.
